Swimmy Activities

Swimmy, Leo Lionni’s timeless tale of love and loss, is the inspiration for movement activities that encourage close listening.  The story of Swimmy sets the stage, and Saint-Saëns’ “Aquarium,” from his Carnival of the Animals, provides the music.  Contrasting sections of the piece create opportunities for fluid movement and for statues.  Includes a detailed lesson plan, as well as the music and game instructions for  the traditional song, “Alley Alley Oh,” a game that demands the same group cooperation that is at the heart of the Swimmy story.  Some brief ideas are included on extending the story into a simple play.  Recommended for grades K/1/2/3.
